Kethry cut her hair in the beginning of October and donated it to a charity that will accept shorter lengths then locks for love.  I would like to think that it had something to do with her knowledge of MooSe’s wife’s battle with cancer that began in September and ended abruptly two weeks ago.

She is truly daddy’s girl and I realize thay she gets the attention deficit disorder from me.  She wrote me a letter as I was packing up to leave after our visit Sunday.

She melted her daddy’s heart and I damn near started crying.  My eyes started to water….

I spent most of yesterday in thr shell shocked confusion that you can only comprehend if you have seen a friend take their last breath.  I spent it with my friend MooSe, by his side as they removed the life support from her yesterday afternoon after he fulfilled her wishes.

I spent the evening and night sitting my own form of shiva with Thea’s family sitting around a fire in the back yard smoking marijuana and reveling in each others presence and communing in our shared emotions.

Then this morning as we awoke from our slumber, we all slowly assembled and greeted each other.  We comforted each other and communed over coffee, macaroons and marijuana.

Then a trip to Denny’s where the food was exactly what you’d expect and service that was subpar even for a Denny’s. This was more then made up for in the fellowship and the camaraderie and that is as good as chicken soup or a joint for the soul.  Rest in peace Thea.

One of the amazingly cool things about Lincoln, California is the Del Webb Retirement Community called Sun City and Sun City Lincoln Hills.  All of these retired people bring not only their wealth and knowledge but their spirit of adventure as well.  They may have grown old but they didn’t grow up. 🙂

Starbucks randomly displays advertising that you are forced to endure before accessing their “free” wifi.  Very rarely is it for something that I might even remotely be interested in or willing to try.  This time it is for Citibank, which is a company that I would never willingly do business with.

I guess I can thank them for paying for the free wifi, I guess…  Another online forced advertising fail because they are not reaching their intended audience.

Placerville

So I had to drive to Pollock Pines for a job and on the way home I stopped in Placerville to take pictures at this place and to pee. Unfortunately they would not let me pee because I was not a customer and have noq ensured that I never will be.

The Venue

image

My best friend scored a gig in Oakland and needed a ride.  I agreed because I love the bay area.  The job is at 420 14th Street in downtown Oakland at a place called The Venue.  The place is scheduled to open on Friday but there is not enough of the other construction work completed for my friend to do what he is supposed to do.

It looks like it could be an amazingly cool place from the outside and the women who work there appear to be beautiful.

Hairless Puppies

image

My friends parents own chinese crested hairless dogs. I had never seen a hairless dog in person. I was told they did not like new people. I asked for a dog treat and was given one. This Annie and she was named after Annie Oakley because she was rambunctious.

image

This is Rusty and he was named for the rust colored spots on his skin and in his hair. These dogs live the nightmare of a perpetual bad hair day. They also have to wear sunscreen….

Light has a major effect on color and shadow. She asked me to take these pictures and this was what I saw.

It took me a long time to get her her to relax and smile.

Often times the hardest situations to get that genuine smile is very difficult to get them when motions are the extreme end of the spectrum. Since we had just come from the funeral of a relative who had passed untimely in a violent accident.

Just by being patient and making the subject feel comfortable you can often achieve the desired effect and if all else fails you can just add Mike’s Hard Lemonade and compliments. Then again the compliments always flow free from me and doubly so when I am taking photographs.

I am encouraged in my photography and blogging because my little sister has offered me her old DSLR. This is important because it means that she reads my blog.

Study In Her.

I have always loved taking pictures of people, both candid, semi and fully posed. I quickly discovered that the more at ease I could make the subject, the better the pictures came out. The more likely I was to get a genuine smile, where it spreads like a nuclear explosion from the center of the mouth and throughout the face infusing color and an inner shine.  Pictures with a smile like this can elicit responses from the subjects friends and family that it is a very good picture of them. This is the bar that I try and set when taking pictures of people.

I always want to try and make then look thwir best but more then that, I want them to look beautiful. I find the human body beautiful and there are certail contours and curves that when nature forms them properly are just beautiful to me.  The amazing symmetry and geometry in the human form is pleasing to.me.

So when I have subjects that I care about, that I have some sort of connection with, I want that genuine smile to be a stunning one. This is often very difficult to achieve because you have to find the right setting, the right banter and most of all the right build up.

This is the hardest part and back in my film days it often meant taking 4 or more frames per set to get a good smile and multiple sets to get a genuine smile.  This often meant hours in the darkroom developing film and making contact sheets. A multi-stage process that took all day.  Enter the digital age.

I so want a DSLR and a microsd card that will upload the images to my phone or tablet via wifi or a camera that does the same.  Right now, I use either my Samsung Galaxy Note or my HTC Flyer to take and edit the photographs I take.  I like the panorama feature on the Note and the widescreen format on the Flyer.  But both of thr cameras have a fixed focus and no optical zoom.  I want a camera with the features of an SLR.
